Reasons for Recent Large Increases in Commute Durations

چکیده
This paper describes a study of daily personal travel time in the Minneapolis-St.Paul, Minnesota metropolitan area and how and why it changed between 1990 and 2001.This has two major components. The first is the relationship between commute and non-commute travel time. The second is the relationship between mode choice, total dailytravel time, and automobile travel time. Both of these are analyzed in terms of how theyvary geographically within the region as well as how they changed during the decade. The study is based on the Twin Cities Travel Behavior Inventory (TBI), whichincluded about 10,000 households in 1990 and about 5,000 in 2001. These large samplesmake it possible to study geographic variations within the region. This is supplementedwith information on commute durations from the Census Transportation PlanningPackage. Average Twin Cities one-way commute durations increased by about two minutesduring the 1990s, while total daily travel time increased by about five minutes forworkers and two minutes for non-workers. This supports an earlier finding that variationsin total daily travel time within the region were primarily due to differences in averagecommute durations rather than non-work travel. The findings here also support the theorythat time spent in non-auto modes reduces the amount of time spent in auto travel, although the reduction is not one-for-one.

Discussion Reasons loss of Bamdzh wetland area with attention to the drought and the techniques of remote sensing
Bamdzh wetland of Khuzestan Province is at downstream of Shavvr River. Its area is approximately 4 hectares. Due to the loss of wetland area, especially in recent decades, this study investigated the effects of a five-year drought (2007-2012) in the Shavvr region and the pond ultimately. Also the comparison between the satellite images and remote sensing technique has been used and was estimat...
متن کاملGetting lost in space: Large sample analysis of the commute distance
The commute distance between two vertices in a graph is the expected time it takes a random walk to travel from the first to the second vertex and back. We study the behavior of the commute distance as the size of the underlying graph increases. We prove that the commute distance converges to an expression that does not take into account the structure of the graph at all and that is completely ...

متن کاملA UNIFIED MODEL FOR RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED PROJECT SCHEDULING PROBLEM WITH UNCERTAIN ACTIVITY DURATIONS
In this paper we present a unified (probabilistic/possibilistic) model for resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with uncertain activity durations and a concept of a heuristic approach connected to the theoretical model. It is shown that the uncertainty management can be built into any heuristic algorithm developed to solve RCPSP with deterministic activity durations. The esse...
متن کاملExploring Invariants & Patterns in Human Commute time
In everyday life, the process of commuting to work from home happens every now and then. And the research of commute characteristics is useful for urban function planning. For humans, the commute of an individual seems revealing no regular universal patterns, but it is true that people try to find a satisfactory state of life regarding commute issues. Commute time and distance are most importan...
